The Website Maintenance Checklist Every Business Should Follow

14 December 2025 5 min readBy Westcode Studio

A simple monthly checklist to keep your website fast, secure and ranking well. Plus signs it's time to call in professional help.

Why maintenance isn't optional

A website is like a car — it needs regular attention or it slowly degrades. Links break, content goes stale, security patches are missed, and before you know it, your site is slow, vulnerable, and ranking worse than it used to. A little monthly upkeep prevents all of that.

Monthly tasks

Check that your contact forms actually send. Review any new content for typos and broken links. Test your site on a mobile phone — does it still load fast? Check that your SSL certificate hasn't expired. Look at your analytics: is traffic steady, dropping, or growing?

Quarterly tasks

Review your SEO — are you still ranking for your key terms? Update your Google Business Profile with fresh photos. Check that all your software, plugins and frameworks are up to date. Review your hosting and backups — are backups actually running, and can you restore from them?

Yearly tasks

Take an honest look at your site's design — does it still feel current, or is it starting to age? Review your content strategy: what's worked, what hasn't? Consider a content refresh or new photography. A website that looks the same for five years sends a message — make sure it's the right one.

Signs it's time to call a professional

If your site is regularly breaking, loading slowly, or you're afraid to update anything in case it breaks — it's time. If you've been hacked, or you suspect you have — it's definitely time. If your business has changed and the site no longer reflects what you do — it's time. We're happy to take a look and give you an honest assessment.

Let someone else handle it

Most business owners don't want to think about website maintenance, and fair enough — you've got a business to run. That's exactly why we offer care plans. We handle the updates, the monitoring, the security, and the backups, and you get on with what you're good at. It's one less thing on your plate.
